Quick News: Apple Kills Aperture and iPhoto

Woah! Glad I went with Lightroom back when I had to make the choice between it and Aperture. Kind of a shame though, Aperture was pretty cool and I like that it had a much more flexible workflow than Lightroom does. But it just ran much slower than Lightroom did on the same hardware…

I’m pleased to announce the official re-launch of www.brianjmatis.com!
“Re-launch? I didn’t even know there was a www.brianjmatis.com, or if I did know, I didn’t realize you still cared about it. I just thought your flickr was the place to see your photos.”

Today is my birthday! So in honor of that, combined with having just recently completed my two thousandth photo of the day, I got a new camera: the Canon 6D. That’s right, now I can shoot full frame. :-D
Plus, since my 50D is still going pretty stong, I can now have two cameras at events so I don’t need to change lenses :-)

2000 photos! [2001]

In honor of hitting 2000 consecutive days of creating a new photograph every single day, I decided to go a little wild. You see, much like in past photo a day milestones, the numbers in these signs are actually a collage that contains all prior photos of the day. Yes, that’s right, there are two. thousand. photos inside this one.
(Originally, I had thought I might do this yesterday, but my Lightroom catalog collections for prior years was a little too messed up and I had to spend the day working on some maintenance instead and so the photo for it was pretty mundane.)
But at least this way, I’m actually able to include yesterday’s 2000th photo in the collage. So for once, the sign contains the same number of photos as the number it represents.
I’d also like to point out that this is definitely one of the most complex photos I’ve ever done. Being in four places at once is insanely difficult!
Also, here’s a shout-out to Shape Collage, the software I used to create the photo collage for the numbers.

Well, I’ve hit 2,000 days of this crazy project. I had planned to do something a bit more special, but it turned out that much more of my past photo a day collections were quite a bit more messed up than I thought. So I’ve spent the day (like seriously 8 hours straight) doing a bunch of catalog maintenance, relabelling, and tagging. At least now I’ll have a lot more of my photos correctly labled and cataloged now.
And besides, 2001 is still an awesome number. So look for something special tomorrow :-)

Rebecca Purple

You may recall from a recent photo of the day that I was very touched and saddened by the loss of Eric Meyer’s 6 year old daughter, Rebecca. Eric was a complete stranger to me, I only know of him through his writings on CSS, but it’s impossible to not feel your own heart break in sympathy for him. Especially considering how open, honest, and raw his blog posting on the subject have been.
While only time can heal such heartache (and never fully), there was a least some measure of happiness when I learned today that the effort to have the color #663399 (a shade of purple) be added to the CSS named color list under the label “rebeccapurple” was recently approved.
It’s nice to know that while the world can bring about such awfulness, we humans have the capacity to bring about some measure of comfort and decency when we try.

The Lego Movie is straight-up one of the best movies of the year. It’s the sort of film that could have been an easy product tie-in cash grab, but it ended up being so much more. There’s so much ridiculous fun, creativity, and even a heart-warming message. In fact, I’m going to watch it again tonight.
Oh, and one more thing: SPACESHIP!

Both of these were taken from items in the kitchen. Can you tell what they are?
And no fair clicking through and checking the tags out ;-p
